JACKSON, MI — With downtown Jackson lunch traffic slow, Mat Stedman knew he had to make a change.
The owner of Mat’s Cafe and Catering, 212 S. Mechanic St., decided to offer family-style meals for pickup during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Stedman said it is going “amazingly well.”
“Pretty much with the COVID, we have a new client base,” Stedman said. “The family-style meals are a huge hit. It’s been very surprising on how well that has went.”
The popular item on the menu is the barbecue. Pulled pork, ribs and pulled chicken are all big sellers. Sandwiches are also popular. Mat’s has also started offering Detroit-style pizzas.
“The philosophy has always been fresh,” Stedman said. “We smoke all our meats here, make our breads here. Everything is from scratch. The fresher the better.”
Going into the holidays, Stedman expects the smoker to be in use everyday. During the coronavirus pandemic, Stedman has been doing more individual meals for catering for businesses. He is also offering a voucher system that employers can purchase for employees as a holiday gift to buy a family-style meal.
But Stedman misses the lunch crowd.
“The catering is the base of the business but the fun part is seeing your regulars come in once or twice a week and getting to know them on a personal basis,” Stedman said.
Mat’s Cafe and Catering is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Call or text orders to 517-914-5797. For more information and the menu visit https://www.facebook.com/matsbbq
