IKEA staff fear for jobs as giant shifts to Amazon style of automation

  • Staff at IKEA Germany told Business Insider Deutschland that the retail giant has begun automating in advance of big changes to how it runs its business globally.
  • Staff and unions are alarmed that IKEA is modeling its business transformation on Amazon.
  • As well as job-cuts, staff fear automation will lead to staff surveillance and worse working conditions.
  • Business Insider Deutschland reached out to IKEA, which said no layoffs were planned at present.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Irene Gutlow* has lived, slept, and breathed the retail industry.

She started out in the furniture industry in Leipzig and has now been working for Swedish furniture giant IKEA for over 20 years.

“When I started, I could hardly believe my luck. A great employer, fair salary, wonderful colleagues,” she says.

The IKEA employee receives wages at above-average pay, additional pension benefits, and — until recently — annual bonus payments if IKEA Germany achieves its targets.

These sorts of working conditions are like gold dust in the industry. Some of IKEA’s employees now feel those conditions are under threat.

“Since the death of IKEA patriarch Ingvar Kamprad, a lot has changed in the company, and not for the better,” says Gutlow. “The Kamprad sons are rejigging the company around for profit, profit, and even more profit. Staff are afraid. We’re afraid of losing our jobs. I can’t recognize our IKEA. It’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

Business Insider Deutschland spoke to IKEA employees across various divisions and at different levels of the business in Germany.

They painted a picture that shows the furniture group is preparing for fundamental and drastic changes to how it runs its business — and it seems unlikely this will be limited exclusively to Germany, bearing in mind the company is present in over 50 countries.

The last decade has seen dramatic change at IKEA

IKEA currently operates over 400 furniture stores in over 50 countries around the world. In his old age, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad struggled to let go of the giant.

Even today, long-standing employees still speak warmly of Kamprad and wish that he was still around: In 2013, at the age of 86, the founder finally decided to leave the management of the company to his son Mathias.

This set in motion a significant generational shift in the company — Mathias Kamprad, then 44, took over the empire. After his father died in 2018, he began entirely reshaping the furniture dynasty for the age of online retail, a process that’s still underway.

This year, IKEA Germany terminated its general operating agreement, known as the “multi-channel contract”, allowing company management to issue redundancies for operational reasons.

Trade union Verdi and work councils shared a survey exclusively with Business Insider Deutschland. It indicated that, out of a total of 2,600 employees across IKEA stores in Germany, 86% share Gutlow’s fears. The survey was conducted over the course of October this year.

Staffers fear mass job cuts are just around the bend. The group’s management

Cyber Monday rings up record $10.8 billion in sales with Amazon touting ‘biggest holiday shopping season so far’

Cyber Monday wrapped up with $10.8 billion in sales, up 15.1% from last year and setting a record for the biggest online sales day in U.S. history, according to Adobe Analytics data.

“Cyber Monday continued to dominate the holiday shopping season, becoming the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, despite early discounts from retailers,” said Taylor Schreiner, director at Adobe Digital Insights.

“Throughout the remainder of the holiday season, we expect to see record sales continue and curbside pickup to gain even more momentum as shoppers avoid crowds and potential shipping delays.”

Mobile accounted for 37% of sales on Cyber Monday, Adobe said.

Cyber Monday discounts included as much as 28% off computers. Shoppers should expect discounts to lessen by 5% to 10% across many categories as we get closer to Christmas Day, according to Adobe.

Still Marshal Cohen, NPD Retail’s chief industry adviser, notes on Twitter that “Cyber Week continues,” as his inbox fills with promotions.

“Either Monday wasn’t big enough or we are just caught in one long continual promotion from the beginning of November,” he tweeted.

BMO Capital Markets analysts observed Cyber Monday promotions that held flat year-over-year, as well as throughout the Black Friday shopping weekend. Some retailers, like Urban Outfitters Nike Inc. and L Brands Inc.’s Bath & Body Works actually became less promotional on Cyber Monday.

“[W]e expect ongoing upside for retail and into next year and believe, for the first time in a while, the power lies in the hands of the retailers and their inventory management; the question will be who chooses to hold the line versus cross it,” wrote analysts led by Simeon Siegel.

So far this holiday season, Adobe says online shoppers have spent $106.5 billion, up 27.7% from last year.

Amazon.com Inc. says that, through Cyber Monday, “2020 has been the largest holiday shopping season so far in our company’s history.” Amazon, as is the company’s usual practice, did not provide numbers to illustrate that statement, but said that world-wide sales at small- and medium-size grew 60%.

Numerator data found Amazon was “the big winner” for the weekend with 19% of total spend, or $1 of every $5 spent.

Amazon kicked off its holiday shopping season with a delayed Prime Day shopping event in October.

Amazon’s bestsellers for the season so far include President Barack Obama’s memoir “A Promised Land,” Revlon Inc.’s One-Step Hair Dryer, and Amazon’s own Echo Dot.

Shopify Inc. says sales for its merchants reached $5.1 billion over the long weekend, up 76% between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Shopify merchants are largely small and independent brands.

U.S. consumers spent an average of $89.20 per order with New York, Los Angeles and London among the top cities.

Local alternatives to Amazon abound for safe, convenient holiday shopping

Organizers of the Holiday Reimagined pop-up market at Edina’s Galleria mall had hoped to promote shopping local without drawing too big of a crowd. They required free, timed tickets to enter and provided contactless ways to shop.

But after Gov. Tim Walz announced new COVID-19 restrictions last month, they decided to cancel the in-person event altogether.

“We thought we had the ideal event planned, with safety being the number one thing in mind. Of course, bringing people together is what we love to do, but it’s the wrong thing to do right now,” said organizer Mollie Windmiller, owner and creative director at marketing company LAB MPLS.

Instead of an in-person market, Holiday Reimagined is now a contactless display, where window shoppers can purchase locally made goods like abstract painted ornaments or hand-embroidered sweatshirts by scanning a QR code with their phone. It’s running through December in the windows of the former Gabberts store.

Plenty of Minnesotans have pledged to shop local this upended holiday season to support community makers and small businesses. But with many holiday markets going virtual, keeping it local might be a bit harder this year.

Alternatives to Amazon still abound for those willing to make a little effort. Shoppers can explore Minnesota artisans’ work online in many places — from individual websites and Etsy pages to the shelves of local shops that are available online.

They also can outsource the search entirely by purchasing curated gift boxes, relying on virtual personal shoppers and curbside pickup at local shops or doing it the old-fashioned way: in-store shopping. (Many, but not all local shops are open, but limit the number of shoppers.)

Minneapolis candlemaker Emma Remer, who refills vintage containers with scented wax to make her Burnboss Candles (burnbosscandles.com), decided to offer virtual shopping appointments on her website in place of in-person markets.

“I’ve missed those experiences and connections this year and hope these online appointments can recreate a bit of that magic,” said Remer, who plans to shop locally online and through social media.

“I’ve seen many local, small businesses getting extremely creative with their approaches to holiday shopping this year,” she said. “It’s vital that we show up and support them now so they can be a part of our community for years to come.”

Virtual markets

Most of the holiday markets and pop-ups in the Twin Cities have gone virtual, with pages that link to vendors or display goods. You can shop them without leaving your couch — from the Black Business is Beautiful holiday market (blackbusinessisbeautiful.org/shop) to the online holiday shop created by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (shop.nemaa.org/holiday-shop/).

Some, like St. Paul’s European Christmas Market (stpaulchristmasmarket.org), also offer streaming music and story times with Santa. The American Swedish Institute’s Julmarknad virtual holiday market (asimn.org/virtual-julmarknad) includes free Zoom panels with some of the featured artists on Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And the Minneapolis Craft Market (shop.mplscraftmarket.com), a digital marketplace with more than 230 makers, also hosts live shopping events on

Amazon says 2020 holiday shopping season is its biggest yet

In a year that’s been anything but ordinary, Amazon on Tuesday said it still managed to have its “biggest holiday season to date,” though the company didn’t share overall numbers to demonstrate just how big it was.

Amazon said in a blog post that independent businesses selling on the platform are “seeing record demand from customers so far this holiday season in the U.S. and around the world.” These businesses surpassed $4.8 billion in global sales from Black Friday to Cyber Monday , an increase of more than 60% compared with last year, Amazon said.

The e-commerce giant offered a slew of deals for the holiday shopping season, on everything from TVs to streaming devices to smartwatches (and some of the deals are still available). Amazon said a record number of customers have been shopping early and supporting small- and medium-size businesses. Amazon’s new Echo Dot has been a top seller, the company said, as well as its Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote and SharkNinja’s Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty Robotic Vacuum, among other items.
