Cyber Monday wrapped up with $10.8 billion in sales, up 15.1% from last year and setting a record for the biggest online sales day in U.S. history, according to Adobe Analytics data.

Mobile accounted for 37% of sales on Cyber Monday, Adobe said.

Cyber Monday discounts included as much as 28% off computers. Shoppers should expect discounts to lessen by 5% to 10% across many categories as we get closer to Christmas Day, according to Adobe.

Still Marshal Cohen, NPD Retail’s chief industry adviser, notes on Twitter that “Cyber Week continues,” as his inbox fills with promotions.

“Either Monday wasn’t big enough or we are just caught in one long continual promotion from the beginning of November,” he tweeted.

BMO Capital Markets analysts observed Cyber Monday promotions that held flat year-over-year, as well as throughout the Black Friday shopping weekend. Some retailers, like Urban Outfitters Nike Inc. and L Brands Inc.’s Bath & Body Works actually became less promotional on Cyber Monday.

“[W]e expect ongoing upside for retail and into next year and believe, for the first time in a while, the power lies in the hands of the retailers and their inventory management; the question will be who chooses to hold the line versus cross it,” wrote analysts led by Simeon Siegel.

So far this holiday season, Adobe says online shoppers have spent $106.5 billion, up 27.7% from last year.

Amazon.com Inc. says that, through Cyber Monday, “2020 has been the largest holiday shopping season so far in our company’s history.” Amazon, as is the company’s usual practice, did not provide numbers to illustrate that statement, but said that world-wide sales at small- and medium-size grew 60%.

Numerator data found Amazon was “the big winner” for the weekend with 19% of total spend, or $1 of every $5 spent.

Amazon kicked off its holiday shopping season with a delayed Prime Day shopping event in October.

Amazon’s bestsellers for the season so far include President Barack Obama’s memoir “A Promised Land,” Revlon Inc.’s One-Step Hair Dryer, and Amazon’s own Echo Dot.

Shopify Inc. says sales for its merchants reached $5.1 billion over the long weekend, up 76% between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Shopify merchants are largely small and independent brands.

U.S. consumers spent an average of $89.20 per order with New York, Los Angeles and London among the top cities.

Amazon said in a blog post that independent businesses selling on the platform are “seeing record demand from customers so far this holiday season in the U.S. and around the world.” These businesses surpassed $4.8 billion in global sales from Black Friday to Cyber Monday , an increase of more than 60% compared with last year, Amazon said.

The e-commerce giant offered a slew of deals for the holiday shopping season, on everything from TVs to streaming devices to smartwatches (and some of the deals are still available). Amazon said a record number of customers have been shopping early and supporting small- and medium-size businesses. Amazon’s new Echo Dot has been a top seller, the company said, as well as its Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote and SharkNinja’s Shark IQ Robot Self-Empty Robotic Vacuum, among other items.

Cyber Monday just became the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, with consumers spending $10.8 billion online, according to Adobe Analytics.

Purchases totaled $12 million a minute between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. PT, with around 37 percent of total purchases coming from smartphones as more shoppers migrate to buying on social media. Curbside pickup was up 30 percent since last year, Adobe said.

Consumers saw the biggest discounts on computers, sporting goods, toys, appliances, and electronics, Adobe said. Some of the hottest buys included Lego sets, Apple AirPods and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

“Moving forward into December, the categories that I will expect to be discounted will be the toy category and then also anything holiday themed — gift baskets, gift boxes, decor,” retail and shopping expert Trae Bodge told NBC News.

Although many discounts are set to continue throughout December, experts advise to shop early as shipping delays loom and delivery costs are expected to increase after Dec. 11.

“Leading up into the first few weeks of December, up until Dec. 25 — that’s when the discounts are really going to get deeper,” said Sara Skirboll, shopping expert at RetailMeNot. “But here’s the thing, your items might not exist — and if you’re shopping online, you might run into shipping issues.”

Like the discounts, the record-breaking sales seen on Cyber Monday aren’t specific to one day.

Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday also did well, totaling $5.1 billion, $9 billion and $4.7 billion respectively, according to Adobe.

Small businesses saw a greater increase in sales than larger retailers on Cyber Monday, up 501 percent while bigger retailers only saw a 486 percent increase, as consumers shop more consciously this year, Adobe said. Seven in 10 shoppers said it is more important to support small businesses than to get the best deal, according to a survey from Union Bank.

Consumers are also “voting with their wallets to support Black-owned businesses and sustainable businesses,” Harley Finkelstein, president of e-commerce platform Shopify, told NBC News’ Jo Ling Kent on Monday. “Consumers will not be driven solely by deals anymore, they’re going to be driven by movements.”

Shopify saw its biggest-ever Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, recording a 76 percent growth in sales since last year. Small-business hub Etsy saw an 84 percent increase in sales during the first eight hours of Cyber Monday alone, according to Edison Trends.

Online shopping has seen a continued surge since the beginning of the pandemic, with digital sales up by 174 percent at Best Buy, 155 percent at Target and 79 percent at Walmart during the third quarter alone.

Consumers pounced on discounts and deals this Cyber Monday, making it the single largest day for online sales in U.S. history. 

Shoppers spent a record $10.8 billion Monday, marking an all-time high for ecommerce spending and beating last year’s $9.4 billion record, according to Adobe Analytics. 

Fully one-quarter of the day’s sales — $2.7 billion — were made during the so-called “golden hours of retail,” between 7  p.m.and 11 p.m. Pacific Time. Consumers spent a whopping $12 million per minute on toys, electronics, clothing, appliances and more during the  8 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak hour of shopping mania, according to Adobe. 

Monday’s total spend represented a 15% year-over-year increase in sales. 

“Cyber Monday continued to dominate the holiday shopping season, becoming the biggest online shopping day in U.S. history, despite early discounts from retailers. Throughout the remainder of the holiday season, we expect to see record sales continue and curbside pickup to gain even more momentum as shoppers avoid crowds and potential shipping delays,” Taylor Schreiner, director of Adobe Digital Insights, said in a statement Tuesday.

Records shattered

Black Friday sales were strong too, with consumers spending $9 billion online the day after Thanksgiving, up nearly 22% from last year’s shopping extravaganza and marking the third-biggest day for ecommerce sales in U.S. history after Cyber Monday this year and in 2019.

Concerns over COVID-19, along with customer capacity limits at retailers, thinned crowds at stores and malls this year. But shoppers were still drawn to deals on Hot Wheels cars, which were among the top-selling items on Black Friday, according to Adobe Analytics. 

The Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Animal Crossing video games for the Nintendo Switch system were also in demand, as were Apple’s AirPods ear buds and the Apple Watch. The smartwatch category saw a big surge in sales, soaring more than 600% over the daily average in October. 

Adobe identified the spending trends by analyzing data generated by roughly 1 trillion visits to retail sites, as well as looking at 80 of the 100 largest retailers in the U.S. 

No place like home

Self-balancing electric scooters, also known as hoverboards, Lego sets, Amazon Echo products and Samsung TVs were also in high demand on Black Friday.

“Generally, the popular items this year trended toward home automation and other kinds of products that serve that stay-at-home consumer and make their lives easier as they spend more time at home,” Adobe Analytics vice president Keith Eadie said. 

“Video games are always popular. The gaming industry is having its best year ever,” Eadie added.

Small Business Saturday, which had particular importance this year amid the pandemic’s impact on independent stores, also seemed to resonate with consumers. Companies with $10 million to $50 million in annual revenue saw a nearly 300% increase in sales compared to a normal day, according to Adobe.

Amazon boasts of ‘biggest holiday season’ ever as in-store shopping plummets

Amazon says it has just had its “biggest holiday season to date” as customers turned to the site to shop rather than venturing out to physical stores. Although CNBC notes that the company did not share actual sales figures for either Black Friday or Cyber Monday, in a blog post the company revealed figures for independent sellers on its platform. Amazon says these sellers saw over $4.8 billion in sales through the two shopping days worldwide, an increase of 60 percent over last year.

“Through Cyber Monday, 2020 has been the largest holiday shopping season so far in our company’s history thanks to customers around the world,” Amazon wrote.

While Amazon’s sales reached record highs, traffic at physical stores has reportedly plummeted. Preliminary data from Sensormatic Solutions reported by CNBC said that in-store traffic fell by 52.1 percent this Black Friday compared with 2019, as customers stayed home to avoid the crowds. If current trends continue, 42 cents of every dollar spent this holiday season could go to Amazon, according to one analysis, up from 36 cents last year.

Amazon says 71,000 small- and medium-sized businesses worldwide surpassed $100,000 in sales so far this holiday season. But Amazon’s own brands also appear to have sold gangbusters.

The company says customers bought “more Ring, Blink, and eero devices on Amazon than during any previous holiday shopping weekend.” The company adds that other top-selling devices on Black Friday and Cyber Monday include its new Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick 4K.

Other top-sellers in the US over the holiday season include Barack Obama’s book, A Promised Land; a Revlon hair dryer and volumizer hot air brush; and a genetic DNA test ancestry kit from 23andMe.

Over the course of this year, Amazon has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of changing shopping habits due to the pandemic. In its last earnings release, the company reported that its net income nearly tripled in the quarter compared to the previous year, and that’s not including its Prime Day sale that had to be delayed this year. This growth has fueled a massive hiring spree at the company, The New York Times reports, with Amazon adding 427,300 employees to its global workforce over the course of ten months.

The e-commerce giant said in a blog post that customers have been shopping early for gifts and seasonal items for their loved ones. It comes as many retailers reliant on physical stores have been struggling to survive.

Popular purchases so far include the new Echo Dot, Barack Obama’s “A Promised Land” book, and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Brush, Amazon said. Self-care, “nesting at home”, and “cozy comfort” were among the most popular trends during the period.

“In a holiday season unlike any other, it’s clear that customers still want great deals on gifts for their loved ones or a little something extra for themselves, and we’re glad to help deliver smiles throughout the season,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, in a statement.

(Reuters) – Cyber Monday was set to garner up to $12.7 billion in online sales, according to industry estimates, surpassing Black Friday’s digital numbers as U.S. retailers enter the last lap of an extended holiday selling season.

Retailers have given shoppers nearly two months of offers since Amazon.com held its Prime Day in October, as they sought to be competitive and recoup the sales lost in this year’s coronavirus-driven closures of malls and other stores.

Latest estimates from Adobe Analytics showed this year’s conclusion to Thanksgiving weekend promotions would, however, still be the largest online sales day in history, with spending between $10.8 billion and $12.7 billion.

“While I anticipate another year of discount chicken — where consumers hold out for deeper and deeper discounts throughout the season … Cyber Monday should (still) offer a great opportunity to make a big dent in holiday shopping,” said Rob Garf, VP of strategy and insights at Salesforce.

Traditionally, Cyber Monday starts with people, fresh after a long weekend, scouring for discounts online at work and driving another big day of promotions.

However, the popularity of event shopping days has faded with the emergence of online shopping and cheap deals throughout the year from retailers including Amazon and Walmart Inc, with the health crisis this year also playing with shopping patterns.

“I did a lot of my shopping even before Black Friday… I feel I’ve gotten mostly everything,” said Caroline McCormick, 33.

The Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, sales engineer said she’s been receiving “early access” Black Friday emails for several weeks now, prompting her to buy hiking boots on Columbia Sportswear’s website for her mother, socks on Kohl’s Corp’s website and more.

Today, when she was pitched more deals for Cyber Monday, “nothing popped out that made me think ‘I need to get that right now.’”

The tentpole shopping event of Black Friday, which pulled in record online sales of about $9 billion, according to Adobe, saw shoppers turning up in smaller numbers at stores as they utilized the early deals and avoided stepping out into large crowds.

This year’s Cyber Monday saw not just online sellers such as Amazon offer steep discounts for its own brands, including Fire TV stick, Echo devices, and other electronics like PlayStations and roombas, but also brick-and-mortar stores such as Lululemon Athletica and Best Buy provide online deals.

“I go online a little bit and look around and do some comparison shopping, but Amazon pretty much beats everything,” said Bill Hon, 49, a cook living in Crawfordsville, Indiana, who started his holiday shopping during Amazon’s Prime Day event.

Apple also held a four-day event on its website ending on Monday, offering gift cards of up to $150 on purchase of certain products.

How Harry Styles Became 2020’s Biggest Style Icon

HARRY STYLES wore a dress. You may well know that already even if you don’t follow fashion or music closely. Photos of the British singer in the custom Gucci frock—snapped for the cover of Vogue—swarmed the internet a few weeks ago, sending his brigade of fans into a tizzy. Scads of tweets and online articles recycled the images. And while most of the coverage lauded Mr. Styles for his beguiling, gender-bending outfit, some conservative pundits predictably wrung their hands, interpreting the hubbub as a death knell for the so-called “manly man.” The cover itself was a landmark: Mr. Styles is the first man to grace the cover of Vogue solo. Think of the instantly collectible issue as a coronation of sorts, confirming that the 26-year-old singer is now officially style-royalty.

Mr. Styles, who rose to fame as a member of the boy band One Direction before going solo, has been a fashion provocateur for several years now. A muse to Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, he consistently wears the label’s rather unisex wares such as tapestry print trousers, lithe loafers and pussy-bow blouses. (Representatives for the artist did not respond to a request for comment for this story and, through a representative, his stylist Harry Lambert declined to comment.)

On Instagram, feverish fan accounts like @Hsfashionarchive (which has over 100,000 followers) vie to identify whatever Mr. Styles is photographed wearing, from whimsically wide floral pants by British designer Steven Stokey Daley to a candy-colored necklace by New York jewelers Eliou. This year Mr. Styles topped the “Power Dressers” list on Lyst, a fashion-focused search platform, reflecting the strong correlation between his clothing choices and what online shoppers seek. Camilla Clarkson, communications director at Lyst, noted that Mr. Styles’s “non-binary style” helps drive his popularity, particularly with a younger generation that liberally shops across gender lines.

Some older observers, however, regard Mr. Styles’s fashion choices through a “been there, seen that” lens. “It’s kind of like this year’s version of rock-star packaging or something,” said Vincent Boucher, 67, a lecturer at Parsons School of Design in New York. As precursors, Mr. Boucher pointed to Kurt Cobain, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, all of whom donned dresses decades ago, nimbly crossing gender lines. (I’d add to that list the lesser-known, openly gay disco singer Sylvester, who frequently vacillated between men’s and women’s clothing—see the video for his 1978 number-one hit, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real).”)

Mr. Styles’s Vogue cover elicited little more than “a shrug” from Andrew Groves, 52, a fashion professor at Westminster University in London. As Prof. Groves pointed out, when Bowie wore a dress in the early ‘70s, it was “really provocative because it was outside society’s norms.”
