Your Ultimate Xmas Wish List

It’s said that giving is better than receiving, but the maxim has a flaw: it assumes that the giver and the receiver are never one and the same. We all know that generosity feels good, and there’s sound scientific basis for it: research shows that the act of giving activates the neural networks associated with pleasure – the same ones triggered by food or drugs – in a phenomenon known as the “helper’s high”.But that doesn’t mean you can’t help yourself. After all, receiving gifts feels pretty good, too, and no one is more familiar with your taste, habits and predilections than, well, you. Besides, you’ve had a tough few months and, as any good psychologist will attest, work is not its own reward. Self-care doesn’t come naturally to us all, however. So, if you can’t quite find it in you to love yourself, we’d advise cutting out the following pages and giving them to a relative with the relevant items clearly marked. You’ve been a very good boy this year, after all.

Xbox Game Pass: The ultimate gaming gift

(CNN) —

The PS5 and Xbox Series X have been at the center of the holiday gaming rush, with people around the world frantically scouring every major retailer in hopes of bringing a next-gen console home. But you don’t need either of them to enjoy the best thing happening in games right now.

In a year dominated by excitement around new hardware, Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service has steadily and quietly cemented itself as the ultimate value in gaming. It’s the best attempt yet at a true Netflix for video games, and now that you don’t even need a console or PC to enjoy it, Game Pass is the perfect holiday gift for just about any type of gamer.

For the uninitiated, Xbox Game Pass is a multi-tiered subscription service that gives you access to more than 100 games on a variety of platforms. For $10 a month you can get either a console or PC subscription, with the former giving you access to tons of games you can play across Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Stepping up to the $15-per-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tier gets you the full console and PC libraries — plus all of the online benefits and free games that come with Xbox Live Gold. Oh, and you also get exclusive discounts, in-game content and the ability to stream many of Game Pass’ best games directly to your Android device.

These games are the real deal, too — we’re talking big names like Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4, Destiny 2 and Doom Eternal. Every new Microsoft game comes to Game Pass the day it’s released, so you’ll automatically get hotly anticipated titles such as Halo: Infinite and Fable as part of your subscription.

Game Pass keeps growing in significant ways, too. The service now includes the full EA Play library, giving you access to a huge catalog of Star Wars, Battlefield, Mass Effect and EA Sports games. And now that Microsoft owns mega-publisher Bethesda, you can expect franchises such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Doom to fully come into the fold. That’s a whole lot of games from gigantic franchises for a single monthly fee.

Despite having “Xbox” in the name, you don’t even need a console to take advantage of Xbox Game Pass. PC gamers can enjoy many of the service’s top games, and there are even some Windows-exclusive titles, including Microsoft Flight Simulator and the Age of Empires series. Better yet, PC titles such as Gears 5 and Sea of Thieves are cross-compatible with Xbox, meaning you can play them with your console friends and keep your progress between platforms.

But where Xbox Game Pass really opens itself up to millions of potential new players is with its Android support. Nearly 200 titles on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate are playable on Android phones and tablets via cloud streaming, from big names such as Batman: Arkham Knight and Halo 5 to popular indies such as Celeste and Hello Neighbor.

Give the ultimate holiday gift this year: a hopeful future

Holidays are about spending time with the people most precious to us. Unfortunately, in the middle of a pandemic, one of the most important ways to show that we care is by staying apart.

Perhaps nobody is feeling this loss more acutely than older Americans.

Seniors – especially seniors of color – are at highest risk of severe illness or death due to COVID-19. About 8 out of 10 deaths in the United States have been people over age 65.

Long-term care facilities have been hit especially hard. Out of nearly 270,000 deaths in the United States, around 100,000 of those lost have been long-term care residents or staff members.

Many facilities have closed their doors to visitors and ended group activities to prevent coronavirus from spreading. These lockdowns help protect people’s physical health, but they can take a mental toll. One in four older adults has reported that they’ve suffered from anxiety or depression during the pandemic.

My own mom is 94, and she lives in a senior living community in Michigan. During last spring’s lockdown, she asked me if this was what the rest of her life would look like. I didn’t know how to respond.

As we’re heading into a new year and new Congress, it’s important to keep the specific needs of older Americans in mind.

The most important thing we can do for seniors – and everyone else – is to finally get this pandemic under control. The incoming Biden administration is bringing together a team of public health experts to do just that. It will ramp up testing and contact tracing, use the Defense Production Act to ensure that health care providers and frontline workers have enough personal protective equipment, provide clear and consistent guidance to families and communities, and ensure that vaccines are safe, effective and equitably distributed as soon as possible.

In the meantime, far too many Americans have lost their jobs – and with it their employer-provided health care. This includes many people over age 50, who often struggle to find affordable health insurance options that meet their needs.

We can help make sure this population has health coverage by passing my Medicare at 50 Act. It would give people the option to buy into Medicare early. This would lower their costs, fortify the existing Medicare program and strengthen the health insurance marketplace by including a younger and healthier population.

As ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I’m also laser-focused on food security. Our neighbors are going hungry – we’ve all seen the photos of cars lining up for hours at food banks, which are struggling to meet demand.

One of the most important steps we can take right now is to boost food assistance. Increasing SNAP benefits by at least 15% would provide an additional $25 per month per person as our country faces a true hunger crisis.

In addition to feeding hungry seniors and

Black Power Clothing Releases The Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide

The Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide

(Image: Black Power Clothing)

A much-needed guide has just been released that lists businesses owned by Black people. Black Power Clothing has just announced that they have published The Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide.

The free guide is now available on it’s website, Black Power Clothing. The company promises that the business guide will continue to grow and there will be more businesses added. The guide includes over 350 businesses and they are broken down into nine categories and 83 sub-categories to make it easy for shoppers to find what they’re looking for. The businesses listed in the guide also include online and local brick-and-mortar businesses.

“Millions of consumers want to change the world with their wallets,” said Tarek Williams, the founder of Black Power Clothing and the creator of the Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide. “This guide allows them to support Black-owned businesses. By supporting these businesses, they are ultimately supporting the communities in which the owners and employees live. The Guide will help the African-American community continue to grow, financially and culturally.”

The main purpose of the publication of the guide is to try to help mitigate some of the damage that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused within and toward minority communities. The Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide provides small- and medium-sized businesses a new marketing outlet that allows them to reach a specific, highly-motivated clientele.

“Our goal is to help people find a Black-owned business to meet each of their needs,” Williams said. “This gives consumers an alternative to mainstream businesses and will help the Black economy to grow.”

The Ultimate Black-Owned Businesses Guide was conceived and created by Tarek Williams with help from countless members and supporters of the Black community across the country. The Guide is the first stage in an ongoing mission to deliver Black-owned businesses more customers and to create more financial independence in the Black community-at-large.

How the Texans’ J.J. Watt became the ultimate role model for Steelers’ T.J. Watt

When life went virtual this spring — including the Houston Texans’ offseason program — defensive end J.J. Watt had to decide what people could see in the background on Zoom calls. The defensive end made sure three things were visible behind him in his home office: his NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards.

And when Watt did an interview in May during the broadcast of The Match: Champions for Charity, the golf tournament featuring Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady, he made sure to let the world know why those trophies were on display.

“I got those just for my brother, in case he’s watching,” Watt said.

J.J. Watt has been chasing a fourth Defensive Player of the Year award — which would be an NFL record — since he won it in back-to-back years in 2014 and 2015. This season he’s been surpassed in the race by a familiar face, youngest brother T.J. Watt, a linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“For me and T.J., playing the same position, fighting for the same things, trying to one up each other at all times, there’s nothing better than that,” J.J. said. “… For me and T.J. personally, there’s obviously a whole lot of competition going on and I have no plans on letting my little brother win anytime soon.”

While sibling rivalry has always driven them, J.J. has helped guide his younger brother through position changes and injuries to blossom into one of the NFL’s rising stars.

T.J. broke out in his third season in 2019, finishing third in voting for the award. This season, T.J. leads the league in tackles for loss and is tied for third with nine sacks.

“That’s what I expect from him,” J.J. said. “I know how hard he works. I know his capabilities. I know what type of player he is. … He should absolutely be in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation, and he’s doing a great job.”

Does J.J. still view T.J. as just his little brother or more like a peer in the NFL?

“Once he has three Defensive Player of the Year awards, I’ll see him as a peer,” J.J. said.

T.J. actually feels the same way.

“I haven’t won one, so I can’t really talk,” T.J. said before the brothers’ Week 3 matchup in Pittsburgh. “I’m just trying to be the best player that I can possibly be.”

‘Beat up a lot’

That competitiveness between the brothers is something their parents, John and Connie Watt, have seen since their sons were old enough to play. Shinny hockey and wrestling matches were intense. J.J. is five years older, and middle brother Derek — a fullback with the Steelers — is two years older. That back-and-forth between brothers is something that T.J.
